What Does STOP THE BLEED® Training Cover?

The course teaches participants to recognize life-threatening bleeding and use three primary bleeding-control methods: direct pressure, wound packing and tourniquet application.

Identify Life-Threatening Bleeding

  • Recognize bleeding that requires immediate action
  • Assess the situation and prioritize safety
  • Activate 911 and get additional help
02 — PRESSURE

Apply Direct Pressure

  • Locate the source of serious bleeding
  • Apply firm, continuous pressure
  • Maintain pressure while additional help is obtained

Pack a Wound

  • Identify wounds appropriate for packing
  • Pack gauze directly into the bleeding wound
  • Apply pressure after the wound is packed
04 — TOURNIQUET

Apply a Tourniquet

  • Recognize when a tourniquet may be needed
  • Learn proper placement on an arm or leg
  • Tighten the device until severe bleeding stops
05 — RESPOND
